1930s Oak Framed Chair with Steam Bent Arms

Item Code: jb001

Super-stylish pair of armchairs, made to the government's utility design, brought in to conserve raw materials in the dark days of the Second World War.

Steam bent arms were an innovation, imported from the racy Continent. The necessity to make best use of materials produced a more minimalist look, that continued through the forties and blossomed into what we now call mid century modern, in the fifties and beyond.

The frame is beech.

A light sanding and french polish has enhanced the warm, rich patina of 75 years. The top fabric is pure cotton, a french pinpoint design, "Rive Gauche": hard wearing yet soft to the touch.

Very comfortable, very stylish...these beauties will find their place in any setting, complementing contemparary, retro or antique pieces.

Seat cushions are loose, fully lined and zipped. Materials are: beech frame, medium density foam, calico, hessian, dacron, pure cotton top fabric. Price is for a single chair.

Dimensions H96, W66, D81, seat 46 cms.
